Characters and musical range:
Deloris Van Cartier (Lead): Mezzo-Soprano, Hi – F#5, Low – E3. An aspiring performer, trying to find make it big in the world. When forced to hide in a down-trodden convent, she is initially repulsed by the life, but after working with the nuns in the choir, she finds that to making it big has taken on a new meaning. Loud-mouthed, and sassy, but ultimately caring.
Mother Superior (Lead): Mezzo-Soprano, Hi – E5, Low – D3. The head of the convent, a traditionalist with a quick wit. Extremely protective about keeping her nuns safe from the outside world. Sure that the outside world only offers corruption, she is instantly at odds with Deloris and her influence on those entrusted in her care.
Sister Mary Robert (Lead): Soprano, Hi – A5, Low – F#3. A postulant, abandoned as a baby and raised at the convent. Shy and soft-spoken, but singing with Deloris lets her find her voice. She is unsure of what direction her life should take. Learns to belt.
Sister Mary Patrick (Supporting): Mezzo-Soprano. A nun of the convent. Consistently perky, enthusiastic, and easily excitable.
Sister Mary Lazarus (Supporting): Mezzo-Soprano, Hi – B4, Low – F3. A nun of the convent and the head of the choir. Rather deadpan and the least welcoming of any of the nuns, but she gets caught up in Deloris’s soul music.
Monsignor O’Hara (Supporting): Baritone, Hi – G4, Low – E3. Head of the church of which the convent is a part. Constantly concerned with financial matters in order to save the church. Finds soul music surprisingly appealing.
Eddie Souther (Supporting): Tenor, Hi – B4, Low – Ab2. The desk chief at the Philadelphia police station and a high school classmate of Deloris who gets her into hiding. Used to sweat profusely under pressure – earning him the nickname “Sweaty Eddie.” He still yearns for Deloris after all these years, and dreams of being her hero.
Curtis Jackson (Supporting): Baritone, Hi – Ab4, Low – A2. A club owner, notorious gangster, and Deloris’s married boyfriend. Cocky and controlling, always on the verge of violence.
TJ (Supporting): Tenor, Hi – Eb5, Low – Db3. Curtis’s nephew and one of his thugs who got the job through nepotism because he’s not the brightest bulb in the box. Constantly in a state of ignorant bliss. Moves well.
Joey (Supporting): Tenor, Hi – Eb5, Low – Bb2. One of Curtis’s thugs. Believes himself to be quite the ladies’ man. Moves well.
Pablo (Supporting): Tenor, Hi – F5, Low – C4. One of Curtis’s thugs. A natural follower, constantly speaks in Spanish. Moves well.
Sister Mary Martin-of-Tours (Featured): A nun. Clearly in her own world, but has her moments of surprising clarity.
Sister Mary Theresa (Featured): The oldest nun in the convent. Decrepit at a glance, but secretly packs a punch.
Michelle (Featured): Mezzo-Soprano, Hi – F5, Low – Bb3. One of Deloris’s back-up singers. Lippy and always quick with a retort. Moves well.
Tina (Featured): Mezzo-Soprano, Hi – F5, Low – Ab3. One of Deloris’s back-up singers. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Moves well.
Ernie (Featured): One of Curtis’s thugs. Initially thought to be a mindless yes-man, he turns out to be an undercover police informant.
